Managing Country
Batavia is jointly managed by three Aboriginal Traditional Owner groups through Batavia Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the State Government with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
The Batavia Board of Directors is represented by nine Directors with three Aboriginal Traditional Owners from each of the clan groups for Northern Kaanju, Atambaya and Yinwum. The Board have identified key strategic priority management deliverables on country and the workforce including Rangers required to undertake these activities.
Since our lands have been returned to the Northern Kaanju, Atambaya and Yinwum peoples, we continue on-ground works including management of feral animals by trapping, fencing, pest and weeds by chemical control and Fire management activities.
Batavia operates a successful Savanna Burning Project with Aboriginal Traditional Owners accredited in training of First Aid, AC/DC, pest and weed management, feral animal control and fire management supported by our joint management partners. We work closely together with all partners and neighbours in reducing wildfire risks to minimise serious harm to sacred sites and surrounding properties.
Through these project management initiatives our Elders and youth have the opportunity to go back onto our homelands to work on country and look after our traditional land to continue the work of our Elders so our traditional ways are not lost.
